music class and science slimy goo experiments!

Had such a lovely day today. We nipped off early to Fred's music class. He loves this so much and is so excited, he especially loves it now as his new pal D is there too. He brought along 2 of his library books to the class so he could look through them with D after the class...v cute! Me and Mia waited for him in the next door room where there is a social group. Mia played with D's sister and with her older friend C. I had a chance to chat to some other mums and they showed me some really good curriculums that they are using.

Then we went to the bank to pay in cheques and then to the ducks to feed them and collect chestnuts. It was raining but we braved it sheltering under trees. Was lovely to be outside.

Then home for lunch. I was amazed that Fred was literally begging me to sit and do his workbook with him and getting cross that I was saying we needed lunch first. I am so thrilled at how much they are loving learning to read and write!!!! Freddie keeps say how excited he is to be able to read his star wars books on his own and asking me to sit and teach him to read!

We did workbooks for a bit then I read some stories to them and we did a bit of sound merging which they are getting the hang of. They can merge the sounds in words such as "it" "is" "in" "sat" "pit" "pin" "pat" "tin" and "sit"...

Then Freddie requested to do a science experiment. We got out his Usborne book of Science Experiments and he chose one called "oozing green slime"! We made the slime with corn flour and water and food dye. It makes an amazing "slime" that acts as both liquid and a solid. The slime feels solid when you punch it yet runny when you hold. The slime is made up of tiny particles. When it is a liquid, they spread out and the slime is gloopy and runs through your fingers. When you punch it, you squash the particles together and it acts and feels like solid! We talked about solid, liquid and gases and the kids were amazed at this substance which was both liquid and solid!

Freddie making the mixture...

Mia having a go..

lots of exploration happening.

working together doing their "science experiment" which involved collecting slime and pouring... They literally did this for about an hour....I was brave and slinked off to make dinner leaving them to it. (The slime got everywhere and it took me an age to clean up but whose to get in the way of budding scientists?!)

Mia getting more equiptment for the experiment! Look at her clothes!!!

Workbooks, ants and play dates!

When we first started thinking about home ed my main concern was socialisation....would our children have enough contact with children? Would they have access to lots of friends if they wanted? Would they feel on the fringe of society or misfits? All I can say is that so far we have so many play dates I can't fit them in to our diary! It is absolutely wonderful watching friendships grow and social confidence soar!

We tend to do an activity at home for a couple of hours a day and then the rest of the day is for play.

It's wonderful to watch how the children grow into things, 6weeks ago if I gave the kids a workbook they would have refused to do it, today they were so excited by having a workbook and I couldn't stop them filling them in!

Cute!

A bit of painting...

Freddie was given an ant world for his birthday ( an ant habitat) which he was so excited about! We have had pet butterflies, snails now we will have ants! We set it up today and went hunting for ants. We need 40 worker ants! We didn't have much luck believe it or not finding any so we have ordered some on the Internet!!!! We excitedly await the postman. In the meantime we will research how to care for ants. We went to the library yesterday to find books on ants but they didn't have any so we will research on the Internet. Thank godness for google!

This afternoon we went to for a play date with a family with a boy exactly the same age as Fred and a girl exactly bar a week or so the same age as Mia! The fun they had! Running around, playing with light sabres, the dog, trampoline, hide and seek, tag....they have really hit it off. Mia and the little girl had a few sharing issues but that comes with being 3! The boys are thick as thieves, wonderful to see these friendships growing! X

A day with family at High Lodge celebrating Freddie's birthday...

We went to High lodge in the summer and the kids loved it. Freddie requested that we went again for his birthday so we suggested it to family who were happy to come along!

The weather forcast was a bit iffy but it remained mainly dry and we all had great fun.

The birthday boy ready for adventure!

Mia put her knecklace round her head and became a little warrior girl!

We all had a lovely packed lunch together and then set off on the trail...
